Cecil County Health Departments will be held at our 401 Bow St. location.

CCHD does not currently administer the monovalent Pfizer (original vaccine) for primary (first and second doses) vaccination. We still offer the Moderna monovalent and the Novavax monovalent COVID-19 vaccine for primary vaccination.

Booster Guidelines

COVID-19 vaccine is authorized for everyone six months and older. The CDC recommends original boosters for individuals 5 through 11 years of age and updated bivalent boosters for individuals 12 years and older. Boosters are available two months after completion of the primary series or the most recent booster dose of an approved monovalent COVID-19 vaccine.

The bivalent vaccines also referred to as the “updated boosters,” contain two components of the COVID-19 virus, one targeting the original strain and one that targets the BA.4 and BA.5 lineages of the omicron variant, which are the most common strains currently circulating in the US.

Children 6 months to 4 years old:

Should receive the primary two-series COVID-19  Pfizer or Moderna vaccination. Booster doses are not yet authorized for this age group.

Children 5-11 years old:

Are eligible for an original Pfizer booster at least two months following the primary series.

12 years and older:

Updated boosters from Pfizer are available at least two months following the primary series or last booster.

Moderna vaccination boosters are available for those 18 years and older:

Cecil County Health Department no longer offers boosters of the original COVID-19 vaccine.

Boosters

Children ages 5 through 11 years old who got a Pfizer-BioNTech primary series must also get Pfizer-BioNTech for a booster.

Teens ages 12-17 may get a different product for a booster than they got for their primary series, as long as it is Pfizer-BioNTech.

People ages 18 years and older may get a different product for a booster than they got for their primary series, as long as it is Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.

FDA authorized, and CDC recommended the Novavax monovalent COVID-19 vaccine to be used as a booster dose for adults. This new authorization will allow people 18 years and older to receive a Novavax monovalent booster instead of an mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) bivalent booster.

Under the new EUA, Novavax is now authorized for use as:

· A two-dose primary series for individuals 12 years of age and older;

· A first booster dose to the following individuals at least six months after completion of primary vaccination with an authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine:

· Individuals 18 years of age and older for whom an FDA-authorized mRNA bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccine is not accessible or clinically appropriate.

· Individuals 18 years of age and older who elect to receive the Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted because they would otherwise not receive a booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

To be eligible for a Novavax monovalent booster, a person must have completed a primary vaccination series but NOT previously received a COVID-19 booster.
