Tobacco Cessation Programs and Classes
American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® Program is a highly structured,
effective program offered by ChristianaCare Elkton Hospital. It uses evidence-based techniques
and is taught by trained ChristianaCare caregivers who will help you create a personalized plan
and offer support for your quit day and beyond.
- This is a seven-week program with a total of eight 60-minute sessions.
- Your “quit day” will be in Week 4, and you’ll meet twice that week for maximum support.
- The program will be held in person at Union Hospital.
In this program, you will learn about:
- Behavior Change: Gaining a deeper understanding of tobacco use dependency and
identifying your unique patterns and routines. - Maintenance: Addressing the physical, mental, and social factors associated with
quitting to help you stay tobacco-free for good. - Follow Through: Learning about stress management, relapse prevention, how to self-
monitor, and how to maintain motivation.

Tobacco Cessation Aids
Nicotine is extremely addictive, and if you need help with withdrawal symptoms, cessation aids
may help.
The Nicotine and Non-Nicotine Replacement Therapy Voucher Program offered by the
Cecil County Health Department can help pay for these aids by providing up to three vouchers
for a combination of options, including Nicotine Gum, Nicotine Transdermal Patch, Nicotine
Lozenges, or prescriptions like Chantix™ and Zyban, as long as grant funding lasts.
The process is simple:
1. Discuss with your provider which nicotine replacement option works best for you.
2. Have your prescription sent to a participating pharmacy.
3. Pick up your cessation aid at the pharmacy.
The participating pharmacy, Northside Pharmacy, can be reached at 410-398-3784.
If you need more than three vouchers, you can access additional cessation aids through the
Maryland Tobacco Quitline (MTQ) by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). The MTQ offers free cessation aids to all Maryland residents over age 18.
The Quitline also provides:
- A free supply of nicotine patches and/or gum, while supplies last.
- Access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Intensive multi-call programs for youth (ages 13-17) and pregnant women.
- Web-based and text messaging support.
- Information for non-smokers who want to help a family member, a friend, a patient, or a
client.

- The Freedom From Smoking program is open to anyone over 18 years old.
- The Maryland Tobacco Quitline offers services to all Maryland residents aged 13 and

Smoking Cessation Program
Vape-Free Schools Initiative
The Cecil County Neighborhood Youth Panel (NYP), in partnership with the Cecil County Health Department, offers a free program entitled INDEPTH: An Intervention for Nicotine Dependence, Education, Prevention, Tobacco, and Health.
This program is a supportive, educational alternative to suspension or citation for students who have violated school tobacco policies. Rather than being a punitive measure, the program teaches students about nicotine addiction, healthy alternatives, and how to quit.
Administered by a trained adult, the program consists of four, 50-minute sessions that can be held one-on-one or in a group setting. Each session focuses on a different topic, including:
- Getting the facts
- Understanding nicotine dependence
- Identifying alternatives
- Planning for the future
To access this program, youth can be referred through their school or a community organization. They can also register by contacting Dawn Rodenbaugh, Program Administrator at NYP, directly via email at drodenbaugh@cecilcountymd.gov or by calling or texting 443.907.3273.
